During the period of October 3 - 7, the course "MECHANICS OF STRONGLY INHOMOGENEOUS MULTI-COMPONENT AND MULTI-LAYERED STRUCTURES" will be held at CISM, Italy. The course is offered in a hybrid format giving the possibility to attend the course also by remote (on Microsoft Teams platform).

Advanced mathematical formulations, computational and hybrid schemes for modelling of strongly inhomogeneous multi-component and multi-layered structures, are within the focus of the program. The course is bringing together a broad multidisciplinary expertise inspired by numerous engineering applications, including, in particular, manufacturing and design of photovoltaic panels, laminated glass, and also lightweight vehicles, soft robots, energy harvesting devices, and bio-composites.

The course combines a number of theoretical approaches to studying high-contrast multi-component and multi-layered structures, including formulations based on physical assumptions, as well as asymptotic procedures. The course is also aimed at enriching the listeners with new developments in metamaterial synthesis, novel homogenisation techniques for periodic media, wave propagation in soft phononic crystals, and fatigue and fracture in soft materials.

The lectures are chosen to appeal to researchers, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, specializing in Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering, as well as Applied Mathematics and Physics.

Holm Altenbach will discuss modelling of thin layered structures, including classical examples of Timoshenko’s two-layered beam theory, classical laminate and sandwich theories along with non-classical refined approaches.

Claude Boutin will focus on homogenization methods in high-contrast media, illustrating the way from local physics to generalized continua.

Weiqiu Chen will provide insight into manipulation of elastic waves in soft phononic crystals, progressing to tunable topological elastic waves.

Francesco dell’Isola will discuss various aspects of synthesis of novel metamaterials, including the pantographic microstructures.

Danila Prikazchikov will provide insight into low-frequency dynamics of strongly inhomogeneous waveguides, illustrating the possibility of multimode approximations and also discussing the delicate formulation of boundary conditions.

Konstantin Volokh will focus on modelling failure and fracture in soft materials and composites.
